Temazcal for couples, also known as "the house of hot stones," is a traditional sweat lodge ceremony that originated with pre-Hispanic Indigenous peoples in Mesoamerica. It was used for bathing, healing, and rituals and was even a place for giving birth, represented by its round-shaped construction resembling the mother's womb.
The ceremony begins with the "Temazcalero," arriving hours before to light the fire, clear the area energetically, build an altar, and heat the Temazcal with volcanic rocks or "Grandmothers" from sacred places like Mexican volcanoes. These Grandmothers carry the knowledge needed for healing.
Before entering the Temazcal, you will be cleansed with copal and herbs to purify your energies. Once inside, you'll be enveloped in a cozy and intimate space, representing the mother's womb.
The experienced healer or shaman leading the ceremony guides participants through the four doors representing the four elements (air, fire, water, and earth) with specific energy, direction, and intention. Songs, prayers, instruments, herbs, water to generate steam, and copal accompany each door to purge the physical body and cleanse the energetic bodies for a new rebirth. The experience lasts between one to one and a half hours.
After the ritual, you'll leave the Temazcal in an orderly and respectful manner, taking a cold bath or shower. You'll then sit down by the sacred fire, where the ceremony will be closed, and you can reflect on your experience.
